Ship Supply at Alumar Terminal, São Luís

Ship crane lifting stores on board from a Tropical Ship Supply refrigerated truck
Ship chandler at the Alumar terminal, São Luís. Private terminal access handled, stores delivered alongside from a warehouse in the city.

Alumar is a private terminal, and that is the part that catches suppliers out.

A chandler who delivers at the public port every week does not automatically get through the gate
here. Access is credentialed, the induction is the terminal own procedure, and the delivery slot is
granted by the terminal rather than negotiated at the barrier. A truck that turns up without that
arranged does not come back later the same day. It comes back tomorrow, and the ship may be gone.

We work inside São Luís, with the warehouse and the refrigerated fleet in the city, and we treat
that access as part of the delivery rather than as your problem.

What Alumar is

Alumar is the alumina and aluminium terminal in São Luís, Maranhão, one of the
three terminals that make this city one of the heaviest bulk hubs in Brazil, alongside
Ponta da Madeira and Itaqui.

The traffic here is bulk carriers and the vessels that serve the alumina chain. The routine is
industrial, and the schedule answers to the plant as much as to the tide.

What we put on board

  • Provisions: fresh, frozen and dry stores in our own refrigerated trucks
  • Bonded stores: under customs seal
  • Deck and engine stores: ropes, paints, tools, lubricants, chemicals, consumables
  • Cabin stores: linen, laundry and cleaning
  • Safety and hygiene supplies
  • Charts and publications, and spare parts

Ordering for a call at Alumar

Send the vessel name and IMO number, the terminal, the ETA and the requisition, by e-mail. A
spreadsheet or a PDF is fine.

Because this is a private terminal, two details matter more here than at the public port:

  • Name the agency handling the call, early. Terminal access runs through them, and
    arranging it on the day is what turns a morning delivery into an afternoon one
  • Say whether the delivery is alongside or at the anchorage. They are different
    operations with different lead times, and guessing wrong costs a day

We answer 24/7, in Portuguese and English.

The other São Luís terminals

São Luís is one port city with several terminals, each with its own access and its own routine. We
serve all of them: Itaqui, the public multipurpose port;
Ponta da Madeira, the iron ore terminal and the largest of its kind in Brazil;
Alumar; and the anchorage.

Tropical Ship Supply is a member of IMPA, the International Marine Purchasing
Association. We write about how calls at Brazilian ports actually run in our
Brazil maritime news and port guides.
